Personally, I think the best part of going out for the evening is getting dressed. This could be because I design clothing for a living, but I don't think so. I think it's because dressing for a night out is like shaping your destiny. Let's face it ladies—when you have girl's night out, you want everyone to notice. And notice they will if you make it more memorable by choosing your outfit according to where you are headed. Dressing in a subtle theme can be invaluable to your night (I stress subtle which is not the same as wearing a costume). I mean, if you are going to a martini bar, are you really going to order a beer? Why should it be any different with clothes! Drink the part, dress the part!
The Sundown: If you're drinking Jack Daniels anyway, you might as well wear those vintage cowboy boots you bought in Santa Monica. Keep the look cute and modern with a denim mini skirt and boy beater or a kitschy cowboy print top. Think Patsy Cline, not Shania Twain.
Hapa: Sometimes a girl needs to get dressed up for no reason at all and Hapa is the place to do it well. When sipping sake, why not be the ultimate in stylish sophistication? Don a fabulous cocktail dress, preferably one in black that has accents of rich fabrications like satin, velveteen or crepe. Go all out by wearing stilettos—or at least heels with ankle straps and carry a fabulous handbag. When fellow patrons ask what the occasion is, mysteriously answer "Why must there be an occasion to look fabulous?" (Okay, that's over the top—don't do that.) Just make sure to sit down before the stilettos take you down.
The Fox: Disco Inferno. The very words conjure up vintage polyester and roller skates, but there is a way to do disco chic—which is another way of saying that if you go to the Foundry afterwards, you won't totally stick out. The most important thing is to find a top or dress that has V-straps (V-straps start at the top center of a strapless top and tie around the neck). Pair the top with really tight flared-leg jeans. Wear silver or gold shoes with either ensemble and feather earrings if you can find them. Top off the look with big, super-curly hair held away from the face with a fabulous silk scarf folded like a headband. Or go Farrah Fawcett—although feathering you hair may make you look more like Mary J. Blige than Donna Summers.
The Players Club/ Foundry: Hip hop night: Don't deny it—what girl among us can resist dancing when Sir Mix-a-Lot's Baby Got Back comes on. You must be prepared! Start with your lowest cut jeans—yes, Brittany low. Once you have a solid foundation of booty baring jeans, go all out on top. Wear a shirt with asymmetrical elements like a one-sleeve top or a diagonal bottom hemline. Top off the look with some ice like diamond tennis bracelets and teardrop necklaces _ but don't be cliché—leave the medallions to those in the industry.
CU Football game-day party: For a fashionista, football is not a top interest, but a party always is! A girl must have suitable garb for the occasion. The football game-day party, whether at a house or at a sports bar, is a great time to show off your sporty side. Dress in black and gold, but avoid a shapeless Buff T-shirt unless you get the smallest one, shrink it and cut it apart to make a cute tank. If you're not brave enough to slice up the Golden Buff, consider these options: layer black and gold boy beaters and tanks, pair with a sporty drawstring mini skirt. Or, go totally out of the box and don a vintage Bears tee and jeans. Just make sure everything is beer-proof!
Burnt Toast: Okay, so you might end up here the morning after girls' night out, but that doesn't mean you can't dress for the occasion. For brunch, dress like you have a gold card whether you have one or not. Sweater sets, pearl inspired jewelry and pencil skirts are perfect to add an air of sophistication, not to mention innocence—something you may be striving for after last night. And speaking of last night, your hair is probably a fright, so pull it back in a ponytail and tie with a silk scarf.
